There is no gentle way to break this to readers of the blog so I’ll just say it!! I cut my hair yesterday. Really cut my hair. I had been mulling getting my hair cut for a while and what pushed me over the edge was when I started school. I realised I didn’t have time anymore to spend on my hair – washing, conditioning, moisturising, detangling etc. Long hair takes up a lot of time. I quickly realised that I needed hair I could care for and style quickly. I’ve also spent the last 5 months with my hair in a ponytail. It couldn’t get any more boring than that!
I’ve wanted a pixie cut for some time now – something fun and modern. I wanted something akin to Gail Malabane, Halle Berry etc. I watched lots of videos on Youtube on how I would style the hair. My favourite are from American actress Malinda Williams.
It took me time to find someone to cut my hair. I took to instagram and went through the pages of Gauteng based stylists. That’s when I came across Sonnyboy Magano’s profile. He is based at Indique Hair in Rosebank. He had many pics of women whose hair he had cut that looked like what I was looking for. I was sold and booked an appointment.
The first step was relaxing the hair (new growth only) using Mizani relaxer. I had a lot of growth since my last relaxer was 6 months ago. After the relaxer was rinsed out Sonnyboy cut the hair using scissors, then applied Keracare Foam Wrap, sleeked the hair down and placed me in a dryer. When my hair was dry he used a flat iron to curl the hair (the parts long enough to flat iron).
I love my cut. He managed to cut my hair just how I wanted it. The only down side is that I will need to go back to him in order to maintain the cut because the edges will grow out and start looking untidy. Other than that I plan to style it myself at home. I’ve dug out my old school rollers. I had to buy a few more of the smallest size since the hair is so short.
Anyone else out there contemplating cutting their hair?
