Pics of mineral oil / petrolatum free moisturisers

Following my post on pics of sulphate free shampoos last week, I thought I would go back to the shops and see what petrolatum or mineral oil free moisturisers / leave in conditioners I could find.  Once again I went to Clicks, Dischem and Checkers.  If anything was out of stock on the day I went to the shop then it won’t be included in this post.  I have found that when it comes to Clicks stores, look for hair products in the bigger branches.  In Pretoria I go to the branch at Menlyn Park Mall because this is the biggest Clicks in my area.  Smaller branches stock very few hair products.

There are more mineral oil free moisturisers than what appears in this post, I just focused on what can be found in the three shops I visited.  I chose these shops because they are found in most towns in South Africa.  I have to place a disclaimer though that all I did was look at the ingredients list to see if a product has mineral oil or not.  I did not go through all the ingredients to see what else is in the product.  I suggest that before you buy any of these moisturisers you make sure you are happy with the other ingredients the product contains.

In taking pictures it made me realise just how many curl / gel activators there are out there.  Maybe I can find one to replace Scurl Activator Moisturiser which has been out of stock in South Africa for months.

I did not include braid sprays in my pics though many do not contain mineral oil and they can also be used to moisturise the hair.

 1.       Organic Root Stimulator Carrot Oil1

Contrary to what the name implies, this is actually a moisturiser and not an oil!  I came across it in Dischem though I know you can find it in Clicks too.  It costs R65.95 (US$7.30).  This is one of the moisturisers that I have.

 2.       Organic Root Stimulator HaiRepair Intense Moisture Crème and Anti Breakage Crème

2

If you look closely at the pic above you will notice that these are two different moisturisers.  They both cost R65.95 (US$7.30).  This pic was taken in Dischem though I think Clicks stocks this line too.

 3.       Dark and Lovely Ouchless Detangler

3

I had always assumed that this product contained mineral oil.  I was pleasantly surprised to see that it doesn’t.  This pic was taken in Dischem where the spray costs R29.95 (US$3.33).

 4.       Restore Plus Oil Moisturising Spray

4

I have noticed that a lot of oil moisturising sprays contain mineral oil.  This one doesn’t.  I did see though that the other sprays in the line do contain mineral oil so you have to be careful that you pick up the right one.  It costs R18.95 (US$2.10) in Dischem.

 5.       Easy Waves Curl Activator Gel and Oil Sheen

5

This is a product I see wherever I go!  I had never paid it any attention until now.  It seems like it always comes in a banded pack so you cannot but the gel activator without the oil sheen.  I guess the idea is that they are supposed to be used together.  Both products do not contain mineral oil and the pack costs R17.95 (US$1.99) in Dischem.

 6.       Sofn’free Gel Activator

10

This one on the other hand I found in Checkers.  I didn’t see it in Dischem.  This might just be that it was out of stock.  It costs R29.99 (US$3.33).

 7.       Motions Nourish Leave In Conditioner

7

This leave in conditioner is one of the products I just assumed contained mineral oil.  It costs R29.95 (US$3.32) in Dichem.

 8.       Revlon Special Feeling Glycerine and Oil Activator Spray

8

Revlon Special Feeling has several products that do not contain mineral oil but I did spot one that has mineral oil so you have to check the ingredients list.  I found the line in Checkers, each product costing R24.95 (US$2.77).

9.   Revlon Special Feeling Gel Activator

9

This also costs R24.95 (US$2.77) in Checkers.

 10.   Revlon Special Feeling Super Soft Activator

17

I have included this even though I didn’t see it in Checkers.  It may have been out of stock.  I bought it in a shop called Sweet Penny.  I haven’t tried it yet but what intrigued me was term ‘super soft’ in the name of the product.  I want to try it on my daughters’ natural hair as well as on my 18 week post relaxer growth.  I will write a review once I’ve tried it.  In Checkers Im sure it would costs R24.95 (US$2.77) just like all the other products in the line.  I paid R21.99 (US$2.44) in Sweet Penny.

 11.   Naturel Gel Curl Activator

11

I almost missed this product in Checkers because it was on the bottom shelf.  Another gel curl activator though this time a bit cheaper at R15.99 (US$1.78).

 12.   Dr Miracle’s Leave In Conditioner

12

I found this product in Clicks selling for R69.99 (US$7.78).  Yet another product I wrongly assumed had mineral oil!

 13.   Dr Miracle’s Daily Moisturising Lotion

13

This was on special in Clicks at R49.99 (US$5.56).  I remember standing in the shop thinking ‘I’d like to try this product’!  I didn’t buy it though since Id already bought the ‘super soft’ activator.  I will give that a try first.

 14.   Curl Care Leave In Conditioner

14

So, on the contrary, I had assumed all Curl Care products did not contain mineral oil.  I was wrong!  Some of them do contain it though the one pictured above does not.  It’s sold in Clicks for R79.99 (US$8.89).

 15.   Gentle Treatment Thermal Leave In Protection Spray

15

I almost missed this spray because there were very few other Gentle Treatment products in the shop.  It’s described as a ‘thermal’ leave in but I decided to include it anyway for those who like to blow dry their hair.  It was on special in Clicks for R53.99 (US5.99).

 16.   African Pride Anti Breakage Crème

18

I have this moisturiser and I like it!  It was on a ‘buy 2, get 3’ special in Clicks.  For the special you can choose any product in the line.  It costs R29.99 (US$3.33).

 17.   African Pride Maximum Strengthening Moisturiser Lotion

16

This also costs R29.99 (US$3.33).  I haven’t tried it yet.  I’m not sure why though!  I didn’t check how much the ingredients differ between this and the crème.

I have been using the Motions Leave In Conditioner and it has been awesome so far :-) I want to get the African Hair Pride Lotion as well as I have heard great reviews about it! Thanks Tendayi! Hope undoing your braids is going well.

I bought the Dark & Lovely Ouchless Detangler BECAUSE of the absence of mineral oil. Unfortunately I was disappointed. It made my hair feel stiff, like a setting lotion. The bottle I bought also had a really stiff pump to spray with. I ended up throwing half of the bottle into another spray bottle, diluting it with water and using it as a leave in whilst roller setting.

I’ve also used the Revlon Super Soft Activator and it is GREAT. It does cause some build up, so if someone is only co-washing or using sulphate free shampoos, they might find it necessary to clarify more than what they’re used to.

The next moisturizer I’m trying is the Carrot Oil or the HAIrepair line. I am a bit of ORS freak, lol

Thanks Tendayi! I’m amazed at the number of options and even more surprised at some of the products. Good to see the industry is responding to consumer demands for healthier Black hair products.

    Hi Ms T

You are a lady on a mission tjoooooo

I just wanted to enquire about no’s 17 and 18. Are these moisturizers protein or moisture based. My hair cannot handle protein moisturizers.

I just also want to ask, is it fine to use Gel activator on relaxed hair as a daily moisturizer

    • says

I have the Creme and ive just checked the ingredients. I dont see any protein. I don’t know about the lotion though.

Gel and Curl Activators are fine to use on relaxed hair.

I can’t seem ti find the lusters’s s- curl. Can anyone tell me where I can get it in Joburg. The last one I had I got from Hilbrow at Ruffs.

        • says

Scurl has been out of stock in SA for months now. The distributors have been having problems. You may come across some old stock in Joburg cbd. It used to be available at Jumbo as well as Africa Cash and Carry before it went out of stock.

Can we classify the Johnson’s Baby no more tangles spray as a moisturizer . It is really great and smells nice too

Hi Tendayi. Another great post. I just picked up Dr. Miracles Curl Care Leave in conditioner this weekend from Clicks. I’ll see how that goes.I’m very much at the beginning of my natural hair journey, so a lot of stuff is trial and error at this stage. By the way, this is off topic, but i just wanted to know. Is there a difference between doing the 2-strand twist and the normal plaiting of the hair. My hair has grown enough that i can plait it ( in sections, not cornrows).I can’t do 2-strand twists to save my life. i’v tried and failed sooo many times. Every time i try to twist, the section unravels immediately. Even with very small sections. Sectioning the hair, and plaiting each little segment is easier for me to do. I ask, because i always see people doing the 2-strand twist & it looks like there’s less tension on the hair with this method. Thanks for all your hard work.

    • says

I dont think there is much difference tension-wise between twists and braids. When I do twists, I make sure to twist each of the two sections before I twist them round each other. I do this over and over along the length of the twist. This is what stops them unravelling when I do them. I suggest you look for ’2 trand twist turorials’ on you tube. It may be easier to see it in a video.

      • nubian_queen15 says

Another question. What would you recommend using on the hair when twisting ? I was considering using a setting spray, but i’m a bit apprehensive, because the only setting spray i have is the Dark ‘n Lovely one, and i don’t like how it leaves the hair hard, and brittle.

        • says

When I twist my daughetrs hair I just use the usual moisturisers and they work well. If you are planning to twist then later remove the twists and wear your hair in a twist out then you could use a gel to give the curls some definition and to minimise frizz. You can even use a product like Organic Root Stimulator Smooth n Hold Pudding.

thank you so much for that info..hope to get more on sulphate free shampoos especially at resonable prices.

Hi Tendayi.Thank you so much for making our healthy hair ‘missions’ so easy. I just wanted to give my review on (no.11 )Revlon Special Feeling Super Soft Activator. It really does what it says.I’ve used it during my relaxed days and it works good when you are a “bun girl”. I always had sleek buns and my hair always looked moisturised and super soft.I’m transitioning now (7months)post relaxer and this product still works wonders for me.I agree that it does tend to build up,but it washes out without having to use harsh chemicals. It keeps my hair moisturised for more than 24 hours.I would suggest that one apply it every other day..if you don’t have time to wash your hair weekly and do cover your pillow or sleep with a scarf, cause it does create oil stains on linnen. We should just keep in mind that what works for one,may not work for the other…but it’s always good to share our experiences and healthy hair advise.Looking forward to hear your and others’ reviews on it!

    • says

Thanks Jen. I’m almost done removing my braids. Just an hour or two more to go then I will be able to give it a try. From your opinion Im glad I bought it! Thank you so much for sharing your review.

      • jen says

You’re welcome :) Enjoy your braid-free hair and I hope you’ve gained a surprising amount of new growth. May this be the year where everybody reach their hair length and hair strength goals…. Have a pleasant weekend!

  10. says

You are awesome! I too just assumed that most of these products had mineral oil! Late last year I was on the hunt for a good moisturiser that didn’t cost an and and a leg. The ones I did come across and bought were Sof’n’free’s kiddie’s line. They have olive oil and shea butter based lotions. I think they were all about R29.90. But I’m glad to know about these others you’ve shared with us for future reference. I’m trying to reduce my haircare spending yet don’t want to compromise on quality.

  11. Borejane says

I’ve been using Restore Mosturising Spray for a while and the Special Feeling Super Soft Activator for years and I’m very happy with the results.

    • says

Thanks for informing me Itumeleng. I checked again and it does have mineral oil. It’s low doen the ingredient list so I must have overlooked it. Im going to remove it so I dont mislead anyone. Thanks again.

  12. Jackie says

Hi – what’s the advantage of Mineral Oil or Petrolatum Free? Why should I look for products that don’t have it?

    • says

Mineral oil / Petrolatum tend to coat the hair and block out moisture. Many manufacturers use petroleum for its consistency and because it is a cheap filler ingredient. Many women can use products with these ingredients with no problem, but others tend to experience limp, greasy, dry hair that lacks moisture.

  13. soso says

Thank you very much for the list, I’m really surprised at how many mineral free and petroleum free moisturizers there are! This list will be very helpful to newbies like me. Now just a little question. Is there a difference between a ‘leave- in’ and a normal moisturizer. I really get confused by these two terms as I assume that ‘leave-in’ would refer to a leave-in conditioner, which I understand is a sort of protein treatment. Now I just don’t get it when bloggers say they apply leave-ins every time they moisturise….wouldn’t that lead to too much protein?

    • says

Leave In referes to leave in conditioners. They are really just moisturisers and have pretty much the same ingredients. I think its just a name really! Leave ins do not refer to protein products.

  14. Iris says

You are really doing a great job by showing us all the products. I got two girls and I really want to theire myself. I have been paying a fortune but the hair is just standing still. I’m starting this journey with you. Tks a million for the advice.

  15. says

I bought the Naturel Gel Curl Activator a week ago because I noticed it had no mineral oil or petroleum but I got worried when it felt like the gels used in several salons… I got worried that it could have alcohol of some sort and stopped using it…. Maybe I should give it another try….

Whatever happened to Lustre’s S-Curl activator Moisturiser? I have looked EVERYWHERE for it… Zimbabwe, Botswana, South Africa… NOTHING…. Please help if anyone knows where one can go stock up on this.

    • says

I dont know if the Naturel Gel Activator has any alcohol. I havent checked the ingredients list.

As for Scurl, the distributors in SA have been promising that it was coming for months now. Thats what led me to look for alternatives because they are just not delivering. In SA you can come across in especially in Joburg cbd. It will be old stock from months ago. In the usual stores though that stock it (Jumbo and Africa Cash and Carry) it hasnt been on the shelf in months.

  16. Mokgadi says

how do you see if your hair is protein sensitive or not? and what is wrong with protein based moisturizers?

    • says

There is nothing wrong with protein based moisturisers. Its just good to know whether you are using protein based or moisture based products so you can strike a balance. Some women claim they are protein sensitive because their hair doesnt react well to products with protein. It always feels hard and brittle no matter what they use afterwards.

  17. Valerie says

Hey Tendayi im a natural and couldnt find scurl no drip so i bought the Easy Waves Combo, its good. Its light on grease and my hair feels soft.

  18. Nonku says

Hi Tendayi, thanks for the great blog, it has helped me get into a almost decent regimen. What i need help with is a good water based moisturizer. I have been using the carrot oil product and sadly my hair is still left dry. What i have noticed is that my hair doesn’t like protein based products, it just breaks ever so easily. Please help.

    • says

      Hi Nonku

All the moisturisers on this post are water based. Have you tried any of them. I’m using the Revlon Special Feeling Super Soft Activator and Im finding it very moisturising.

  19. Quincy says

Tendayi, thank you for this priceless piece of information that I just stumbled upon. Please forgive my ignorance, but are these products to be used on natural or relaxed hair. I have natural hair and so does my 6 year old daughter and we have not been using any form of moisturiser on our hair. Are these products safe for little girl’s hair.

I love your blog. keep up the good work.
